Several positions within the departments of Building, Zoning, and Enforcement can be held by one person. In Pere Marquette Township, Terry Wahr holds the duties of both Building Inspector and Zoning Administrator.

As Building Inspector, Terry is in charge of issuing permits for building and remodeling, site preparation, erection of fences, building of porches and stairs, and any other activity which requires a permit in the Township. He can advise you of the requirements for various permits and help you get your project completed efficiently. The Building Inspector also conducts inspections and issues the Certificate of Occupancy following final inspection and acceptance of a project.

As the Zoning Administrator, Terry helps update and maintain the master copy of the Zoning Ordinance text and maps. He periodically checks properties in the Township to assure compliance with the Ordinance. He also reviews all proposed uses of sites in the Township to assure compliance with the Ordinance.

If there is a violation, the Zoning Administrator has the authority to issue a "stop order". He then reports all violations to the Township Board for action. Only he or the Township Board may remove a "stop order".

The Zoning Administrator also receives all requests for rezoning, for variances, Conditional Use Permits, etc. His office then forwards such requests to the proper Board or Commission.

Both the Zoning Administrator and the Building Inspector are non-voting advisors to the Township Board, the Planning Commission, and the Zoning Board of Appeals. You can learn more about these other Boards and Commissions on our other web pages.

Building / Zoning Assistant

Tanya Avery joined our staff in the fall of 2006.  Tanya was raised in Charlevoix and has a business degree from Ferris State University and work experience with the Charlevoix County offices.  She is Terry's assistant and helps with questions in our building and zoning offices.  In addition to helping Terry with his many responsibilities, Tanya also serves as an assistant in the Assessing Office.  She also helps the Planning Commission secretary, and is assisting in the GIS office.  (Busy gal!)  Contact Tanya at the Township offices, 231/845-1277 or by e-mail at tanya@pmtwp.org.
